The Katy Trail, at 225 miles, is the longest improved trail in
the US.
The Katy Trail presently runs from Clinton to St. Charles. When
completed, the Katy will be 233 miles and run from Clinton to
Machens. The extended length is not the only great thing about
the
Katy Trail. It also runs through some very scenic countryside,
and
portions of it parallel the Missouri River. Because it parallels
the river,
it passes through many old historic towns and villages. Many of
these
towns have winery tours. Hermann and Augusta, are two of the
most popular stops for touring and tasting. There are
vineyards in and
around both towns. Defiance, which is on the eastern part of the
Katy Trail, also has the last home of Daniel Boone, who helped
settle the
area.

The Katy Trail is hard-packed and well-maintained. Even so,
trail-type or hybrid tires are still the best for thwarting
small sharp
stones or traversing the trail in the spring or after a rain.
The turning
colors and cooler weather make October one of the most popular
months to tour the Katy Trail. The Section of
the Katy Trail between
St. Charles and Boonville has been designated as an official
segment
of the Lewis and Clark National Historic
Trail. The entire
trail is part
of the American Discovery Trail.
